Horror has come knocking on your door

Hinges is an alternative controller-focused horror game that revolves around a physical door and the controls related to it and its hallway. This project aimed at creating a one-of-a-kind horror experience by blending the physical controller & game design as closely as possible.

As one of the two producers on this project, I handled all organizational tasks and assignments via Jira and ensured we remained on track with our planned timeline. Our 16-person team was split into subteams covering disciplines such as Art, Technical Art, Game Design, Programming, and Hardware. I also supported the team during our scheduled weekly team meetings & standups.

Building the controller

The biggest challenge with this project was constructing and iterating on the physical controller, which was the most important part of the game. Having a full-size door that the game revolved around created an opportunity to design something fresh and unique, but also created problems during development. Due to the controller's large size, balancing between our debug build & using the actual controller wasn't always seamless, especially given response times & other factors. Since our controller is also very large, portability for future events & festivals could pose a problem. To mitigate this, our hardware team designed it in a modular way, using mounting brackets so it can be disassembled into smaller pieces for easier transport.
